Jessa Hughes is a lecturer in Horticultural Science within the Plant Science Department at the University of Saskatchewan. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and a Master of Science in Plant Science from the University of Saskatchewan. Jessa’s expertise lies in ornamental plants, urban agriculture, greenhouse production and landscape design.

Georgiana Antochi-Crihan (Ahn-toh-kee Cree-han) is the City of Saskatoon’s entomologist. Shes been working with the city for over a year to deliver the citys mosquito control, Dutch elm disease, and invasive species monitoring programs. Georgiana also provides insect-specfic knowledge across the organization and assists and assists in resolving insect-related inquiries from residents. She recently received her Masters of Science fromthe University of Saskatchewan where she studied the effect of prairie potholes on prairie insect communities/ Georgiana is currently the Vice President of the Entomological Society of Saskatchewan and in her free time writes insect-related articles for Birds and Blooms magazine.

Madeline Berezowski is President of SOS Trees Coalition and has been actively involved in urban forest advocacy, conservation, and public education in Saskatoon. She will be moderating today’s discussion on Dutch Elm Disease.

Richard is one of four people in 1992 who started the non-profit organization SOS Elms, later to become SOS Trees. They were concerned with the news that Dutch Elm Disease was expanding and killing American elms in southeast Saskatchewan. He has served on the Board in various roles ever since. Born and raised on a small farm in the Aspen Parklands of Alberta, he studied Zoology at the universities of Alberta and Western Ontario. He enjoyed a career with the Canadian Wildlife Service as a biologist for over 40 years working on conservation of Arctic-nesting geese.

Robin Adair has been the owner of Arbour Crest Trees and Landscapes for 18 years in Saskatoon and central Saskatchewan. He is also the forestry specialist representative for Northern Saskatchewan for Tree Canada. He is an ISA Certified Arborist, ISA Tree Risk assessor, Qualified and registered Tree evaluator. He enjoys sharing his tree knowledge around Saskatoon by doing workshops and pruning classes.

Brooke Coller is the University of Saskatchewan’s Horticulture Outreach Specialist. She coordinates Gardening at USask, an initiative offering accessible, research-backed education and outreach tailored to the Prairies and North. Brooke is passionate about connecting communities and deepening our relationship with the land through sustainable gardening and landscaping.

Dr. Karen Tanino is a Professor in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Saskatchewan. A past president of the Canadian Society for Horticultural Science, she has authored more than 140 refereed research papers, books, and book chapters, and currently supervises a team of ten graduate students and research associates.

Dr. Tanino founded the Prairie Horticulture Certificate Program and oversees the Gardenline and the Gardening at USask offices. Deeply committed to improving food security, she chaired the first and second Saskatchewan Food Summits, led the Northern Food Security Thematic Network under the University of the Arctic, and contributed early leadership to the Prairie Fresh initiative through the Hort2020 workshop.

In 2022, she was recognized as one of the seven most influential women in Canadian agriculture.

Nair immigrated to Canada in 1968 and enjoyed a 42‑year career as a computer hardware engineer, working across major technological eras from punch cards to modern microcomputers. He held several senior roles, including national training coordinator, authored instructional materials, completed numerous international postings, and earned multiple industry honors.

A lifelong orchid breeder and grower, Nair has cultivated more than 4,000 orchids at a time and has received major awards, including the American Orchid Society’s Educational Exhibit Award. He is a past vice‑president of the Regina Orchid Society and a frequent invited speaker. He also developed a home system to reduce carbon‑dioxide footprint.

Born in tropical South India, he grew up among spice plantations and later taught popular seminars on spices and cooking. Known as a natural educator, he explains complex topics with clarity and enthusiasm.

Since 1981, Nair has focused extensively on low light tolerant plants, especially Phalaenopsis orchids, citrus, and other indoor crops adapted for windowsill conditions. Low light tolerant lemon breeding is one of his major hobbies, and his research has expanded to indoor, low‑light vegetables. He has exhibited a wide range of plants, fruits, and vegetables at provincial and local shows and has lectured in advanced horticulture courses at the University of Saskatchewan.

Nair has presented seminars internationally—in Canada, the U.S., Australia, the Netherlands, Iceland, Finland, and India—and regularly attends global grower and breeder conferences. For over 40 years, he has served as a horticulture judge in Saskatchewan and was part of the first Master Gardener cohort certified by the University of Saskatchewan. His many awards include hundreds of ribbons, multiple grand aggregates, and an Honourary Life Membership from the Saskatoon Horticultural Society.

In 2017, he obtained Plant Breeder’s Rights for his ‘First Canadian’ lemon and ‘First Canadian Golden’ lime, receiving U.S. patents for both cultivars in 2019.

Byron Tenkink is a microbiologist who has been fortunate enough to apply his degree while managing an organic greenhouse operation just outside Prince Albert, Sk. This will be Byrons 17th year in the industry.

A native of Saskatoon, Jamie Bakos completed Canada’s first Environmental Engineering degree in Guelph, Ontario in the early 1990s. Since then, Jamie has worked at various Engineering firms across the country. In 2008 he moved back to Saskatchewan to spearhead business and product development at Titan Clean Energy Projects, based in Craik, SK. Titan is a leader in biomass carbonization, carbon sequestration and the development of Canadian-made activated charcoal products for agriculture, horticulture, household and pet care.

Co-owner with his 2 daughters , Dutch Growers a 3rd generation garden center established in 1953. Rick is also co host of Garden Talk on CKOM and CJME every Sunday morning answering garden questions live on this call in show. Rick has been involved in the family business all his life and full time since 1978.

Teresa is an entomologist and PhD researcher at the University of Saskatchewan, specializing in insect pest management in agricultural systems. Her work focuses on understanding the role of both pest and beneficial insects in crop ecosystems and how natural enemies can help control pest populations.

Teresa is also the founder of Insect Track Solutions Inc., an AgTech startup developing digital tools to help farmers, agronomists, and the public identify insects and make better pest management decisions. She is passionate about helping people better understand the insects around them and the important role they play in healthy ecosystems.

In addition to her research, Teresa is passionate about science communication and education. She is the author of the children’s book Finding Sakbe, published in English, Spanish, and French, which highlights the importance of biodiversity and pollinators such as bees. Through her work, she enjoys helping people better understand the fascinating insects that live in our gardens and landscapes.
